CHAZ

I am all-business as I fold my hands and lay them on top of the contract. “The gist of it is this: we enter into a fake, whirlwind romance where you pretend to be my new girlfriend for a certain amount of time. We’ll get engaged at some point and, in return, I will secure you an audition invitation to the American Ballet Company.”

Taylor’s bright blue eyes widen, and I keep going.

“After we achieve our goals, we quietly break off the engagement and go our separate ways.” She just blinks and I can tell she doesn’t know what to say so I give her a moment to process it. Yep, I’ve made her speechless. “Well?”

“Well, that’s a lot to think about,” she says slowly. “Is that a contract?” She nods to the stack of papers beneath my hands.

“Yes, and I’ll be more than happy to go through it with you, page by page. I want you to feel completely comfortable with our arrangement.”

Taylor opens her mouth then immediately closes it. I can practically hear her thoughts, spinning in her head. “First of all, why in the world do you need a fake girlfriend? After being out with you tonight, I think pretty much any woman would like that title.”

“Maybe, but I want to avoid all the drama that comes along with a real relationship. I want to keep living my life and not have to worry about calling, texting, explaining, fighting and all the other bullshit. I want someone on my arm to go to events with me, smile pretty for the camera and help mend my image.”

“You want a trophy girlfriend.”

“Yes, that’s pretty much it.”

For a moment, she looks a bit offended. “What’s wrong with your image?”

I shift in my chair. “Lately, I’ve been hearing some negative comments about me getting older.”

“You’re 42, not 72.”

“That’s what I said!” I exclaim and can’t help but crack a smile. I like that we’re on the same wavelength. “But, in my business, 30 is considered old. There’s a role I want, and the studio doesn’t think I can pull it off. They’re eyeing someone younger and it’s pissing me off.”

“So, you think that by dating a younger woman then people will view you as young again.”

“Exactly.”

“Hmm.”

“What’re you thinking?” I ask. I realize I’m on the edge of my seat and I really want her to agree. But I can’t exactly figure out what she’s thinking.

“I’m a little shocked, to be honest.”

“Don’t you want a chance to get into ABC?”

“Of course, I do.”

“So, what’s the big deal? You go to some parties and be seen in public with me and then go to your big audition.”

Her face flushes. “It’s not that easy. I have some questions and concerns.”

I push the contract over to her. “Take a look and ask away.”

Taylor begins to flip through the pages, reading through the clauses. “I guess I’m wondering about, um, the physical stuff…”

“Sex?”

My directness seems to fluster her, and her cheeks turn a deep shade of crimson. “Among other things, yes.
